My car gave me an error in the first few miles on asphalt, but as soon as I hit the dirt, it never came back. nothing had been touched on the car at that point.

why nobody thinks about high adjustable airsprings systems like landrover ?

    • Shock Therapy llc
      Shock Therapy llc

air springs are not a linear spring rate and not good for large wheel travel vehicles and faster off road running. But, there are some ride height adjustable systems in the works. Coming soon.

I have error codes every once and a while on my smart-shox. I have to stop, turn off the engine, turn it back on, cycle through all three modes and it goes away.

There's a warranty recall on smart shox models. The computer just needs to be flashed by your dealer. Hopefully that's your fix.

  • WeekendWarriors

I'm excited for these smart shocks because like you said, it allows for us to do Rock crawling and dunes. As someone out east who rides both, I'm going to struggle on choosing shock and tire setups for the best of everything.

If you're going to build suspension tunes based on geolocation... then it makes sense just to make that a defaulted delivery setting and provide them all. . What would be awesome is an open-source format where you can buy e-tunes from tuners for specific courses. ie: Going down to Slash X and buy a tune from someone that built one. I'd love to see GIS implemented in this where the specific location changes the tuning, so the computer will know the layout of a whoops section and can adjust as it interacts with the terrain.

    • Shock Therapy llc

If I said that we already have that then I would get in trouble. So I won't say that.

Government regulations on shock damping... please. It's because they have a vehicle that can be loaded up in so many different ways and has to go over such a wide variety of terrains at speeds from all experience types. No matter the temperature, elevation, terrain, weight within ratings... Can-Am is giving you the best compromise they can. That's why you pay these shock experts and explain to them what you're doing... . Everyone wants to blame shit on government regulations... Show me one statute that says the shocks can't be smooth... I've watched nearly all of Robby Gordon's videos and they're developing the shocks to be as smooth as possible and tune out unwanted interactions such as bucking, and he claims to have a team of very competent lawyers. Why would there be a regulation on damping but then allow for a 20+ inches of travel. . Manufacturers are afraid of liability form suspension tuning, but put weak crushable cages on them? I think it's more plausible that the shock therapist is bribing Can-Am to use junk settings to create a deeper market, and I sincerely doubt that is the case.

@UTV Guide I couldn’t find the test they were talking about. I found a CPSC government voluntary test that uses an electric motor to turn the steering wheel 500 degrees a second around that speed... they accelerate to the speed, coast, then turn the wheel in increments until the ROV goes onto 2 wheels. . But it’s not mandatory and the published results I found showed all 10 tested ROVs went onto 2 wheels. . I’d be interested to read about that test. Maybe it’s Canadian.

    • UTV Guide
      UTV Guide

Doubt Speed UTV has passed the J turn test yet. That affects shocks, sway bars, ride height and tires.

    • Firestarter
      Firestarter

@Shock Therapy llc Actually you blamed ride quality and performance on government regulations... here are the quotes and time stamps. . 12:51 "has to pass certain, uh, government regulations about turning and all that kind of stuff." . 13:06 "why doesn't it ride that way from factory if they know what they are doing" . 13:15 "what stifles them when it comes to ride quality or any of the performance stuff when they know how to do it" . 13:30 "hancuffed by the government regulations" . What rollover test are you referring to? The CPSC voluntary standards? CPSC published results for rulemaking shows 10 undisclosed models which had 30mph J turns performed at various steering angles until they rolled over... It took .625 to .785 lateral G's to cause all ROVs to rollover... Steering input was varied at 500 degrees per second.

    • Shock Therapy llc
      Shock Therapy llc

LOL. There is no dampening regulation and we never said that. The roll over test is 25 mph on asphalt, full crank of steering and if it picks up one tire it fails. That is a test that limits shock settings and ride heights from the factory. There are many others.

We don't do dirt bikes for three reasons. One, there are a lot of people already doing them. Two, we test every UTV extensively to get what we feel are good notes to start with and adjust for each person's needs. I am not taking the liability of putting our guys on dirt bikes to dial things in. Also, every rider's style affects the tune. Not so much in UTV.

It would be awesome if there was a GPS in the car and it changed its tune on suspension based on the area it is driving in.

That also takes into account ambient (and shock) temperature along with data taken from a forward mounted camera cross referenced to topographical information.

I hate the idea of computer controlled suspension. Now I have to invest in software and hardware if I wanna tune. Constantly upgrading and updating. Lots of money. I'd much rather take the damn shocks apart and change internals. I have diagnostic equipment and it's a yearly battle to stay on top of it.

The real reason they keep it for the masses is that the Msrp has to stay at a good price because if they built machines equivalent to shock therapy cars or a race car they would be considerably more expensive.

    • Firestarter

@Sean Peakes really? It’s been all over glamis, Parker, Arizona... Robby Gordon does technical briefings every week with footage and data from testing along with production parts. . They literally have vendors, like TAPP clutches, come on and explain the clutch design. . This last briefing he tore apart the hydraulic steering and explained the design and setup on the nearly complete 4 seater. They’ve been testing the 2 seater long wheelbase before. . You should watch the briefings. He explains what they do in the trophy truck world and how those philosophies are used in the SXS platform they created.

    • Sean Peakes
      Sean Peakes

@Firestarter Ya so where is this speed machine you speak of? I’ve heard a little about it but still haven’t seen one. Only in drawings.

    • Firestarter
      Firestarter

@Tucker Bradshaw Yup, look at what Speed is building for $30k. Bigger cage, wider, way more power (30 to 105 more HP than X3 turbo rr), tapp clutch, 15" wheels, huge shocks, bushings, and joints, and so much more. . Though, Speed get's their shocks at cost and Can Am has to pay Fox for a bespoke package which dramatically raises the cost. Imagine, they have a different shock for nearly every X3 trim, which means all the non-interchangable parts between them, like pistons, bypass tube, shock body, damping rod, etc, have much lower economies of scale. Plus front and rear are different. Speed is literally using the same shock front, back, left, right, and across all trims... I think they put a limiter in the front or rear... but they get massive economies of scale for making modular parts.

    • Tucker Bradshaw
      Tucker Bradshaw

Can am and Polaris are partnered with companies who produce aftermarket parts for their vehicles, skimming $ off the top of those purchases as well

    • Firestarter
      Firestarter

yup, plus they want to sell more aftermarket parts. Even if they're not Can-Am brand they still make a bunch off financing.
