How hard could it be to make an unpickable lock? Turns out pretty flippin hard. After I recovering from the mental and physical turmoil of getting this thing made I called up a locksmith to see if they would be able to pick it. A fun time for all involved.

Seeing all your stuff here and the brilliant mind behind it is pretty cool I have to admit. I want to put u up to a challenge. See if u can make an automatic braiding machine. Doesn't matter if its fully mechanical or if software is involved, its totally up to u.

I love the diabolical engineering. You hit the nail on the head with the comment about the mechanical complexity being too much. It creates more long-term potential points of failure, and the last thing you want a few years down the line is to be forced to break it during an emergency. Perhaps someday you could expand a bit on the keyless lock idea. There are benefits to keyless physical access control, but also challenges. In the realm of high-assurance/governmental access control, they will sometimes have to pay companies like HID roughly three times the industry standard cost to meet audit/certification requirements despite the actual hardware not being much different if at all. It's also the case that a single breach caused by a design flaw could compromise every unit with the same model/technology whereas physical keys are usually inherently different. They've gotten pretty good in recent years, but there are mass-produced models as new as a couple of years ago that have needed complete recalls due to product-inherent defects. Humans are generally the weakest link in terms of security, so as long as the general security posture holds and people respect it, the access control portion is more of a precautionary measure and a way to uphold the theatrical aspect that reassures those involved. As good as physical, electronic, biometric, and other systems have become, none are infallible. Common sense will always be king. For example, this lock could be picked using a field imaging rig (fun laser wand) to send the internal dimensions to a CAD file which could be used to calibrate one's tools or even create a key. This isn't common or cost-effective, but it pretty much defeats the entire design philosophy of most locks. The whole 'security through obscurity' design philosophy can be taken in the other direction.

So basically you've combined a pin tumbler and a warded lever into one lock. Interesting approach. If you wanted it to be commercially viable you'd mostly need a way to set different combinations other than by how you machine it in the first place. I can think of a few ways you might do that, and it's a trivial problem compared to reliably locking the pins. Wouldn't be of much practical use for residential doors since burglars tend to just force entry rather than picking the lock, but you might find some market for it for high-security vault doors and such. I expect picking this thing would consist of feeling for slight differences in how far the tumbler turns, adjusting one pin at a time and trying to feel when you've got it lined up with the wards. Might not be totally impossible, but definitely not going to be easy. A lot more like trying to pick a combination lock. Don't get too excited about locks that don't use physical keys. They merely have different vulnerabilities, and there have been some spectacular failures ranging from anyone with a smartphone being able to reset the code and open it to being made with all plastic internals that melt open in ten seconds with a propane torch.

Yeah RFID locks might be unpickable, but they are extremely hackable. You are probably much safer with a hard to pick lock as than an RFID lock.

locksmiths suck at picking locks. if you really want to test your lock let the "LockPickingLawyer" try to pick the lock. he will most likely succeed but if he can't then you got something there. he has picked many locks that are advertised and unpickable. wow awesome she called it :) if you do send one to the LockPickingLawyer I'd love to see how he does and what your thoughts are one the results.
