major issue is the sub transmission shifting and vibration in low 4x4
turning radius could be better
I 4wd is about as bad as visco lock

Excellent overview and comparison to rzr. I do trust honda quite a bit more than polaris. Glad honda has stepped up to the plate with performance. I have had honda odysseys and polaris atvs. Polaris always has the innovation but honda the reliability. I do really like the 4wd system of the polaris although don't normally drive in conditions where I "wouldn't make it" with the honda. I can drive the honda in 4x4 all the time, right? I like to trail ride my Sportsman 4x4 in 4x4 mode as it handles and slides a lot better.

How an u say the talons suspension is TOP NOTCH? That's been on the drawing board for years before it came out. And to compare it to the polaris turbo is crazy. The razr turbo has the best NEW SUSPENSION IN THE BUISNESS TO DATE.its computer reads the travel 200 times a minute. Be honest its like driving a Cadillac to a Flintstones mobile.. TOP NOTCH LMAO

Put RTV around the wire at the fuel injector plugs. Engine vibration work-hardens the wire causing it to brake. Will save your day and a lot of time trouble shooting.

Sub-trans, your major complaint.. it's a non issue. Mine is seamless between all modes including H/L range. No clunks, or grinds. No other reviewer has had anything to say but rainbows and unicorns. Yours definitely has a problem. Get it to the dealer. If it's not an easy adjustment, make them swap out the entire trans.

Do some research genius literally hundreds of people have had low range issues... Get on some of the Facebook pages I'm glad you got lucky and don't have one with the problem though. seems like it's about 50-50 if they have problems engaging and then 10% of those actually strip out gears

I have a Honda Talon 1000 R myself. I was kinda skeptical at first about the I-4 wheel drive. I feel Honda did right. I thank its more trail friendly. A true locker is nice to have but sometimes I really hate it. Like w/ a true locker when you are trying to turn, everything is fighting itself and that’s when thangs break. A true locker in mud makes sense. On rocks, me personally I like the I-4 Wheel drive. That way let’s say if 3 wheels are pulling you through and 1 wheel is off the ground and suddenly hits the ground while your turning, you are least likely to break a half shaft//axle. Like the video. Thanks for sharing.

    • Michael Lynch
      Michael Lynch

@Mud Puppy Yep, because the wheel speeds in the PCM are set for the stock diameter tires, when you change the diameter, you upset the PCM. I'm betting that there are some pretty complex software gymnastics going on inside the PCM. Plus the heavier tires alter the brake effectiveness. The payoff is the lighter steering, the front differential is open all the time.

If you see a second spring on a shock and it’s maxed out, it’s probably not a dual rate setup. The smaller spring is just a keeper spring. It keeps tension on the main spring at full droop. I’m really liking the new Talon! Might be time to upgrade my old rzr 800.

You're a little late on the review. Pioneer was for the old guys, the Talon is for the old guys that want to feel "Sporty" again. Inferior in most ways to other SxS's. Better seats than Polaris though, not sure what could be worse then those. Font end is far worse then ViscoLok, which actually works great from the factory until you burn it out with larger tires. Jumps about as well (as bad) as a YXZ. It's a good "Sport UTV" for the old timers that want to go bar to bar.

more premium than a polaris or canam. where. its litterally a carbon copy of build quality. the honda doesn't jump or ride better. thats just a lie. all the seats adjust on all brands. all steering wheels tilt. the popos telescope as well. the instrument cluster is off a honda foreman. it is litterally just what most entry level sxs are built like. it has no carrier bearing because the front drive shaft is shorter than the others. the others dont even have rear driveshafts. the can ams and polaris have the exact same rubber booted heim joints on there radius rods. this is a terrible review. 90 percent of what your saying is not true. yeah its a good machine. is it better no. that rear suspension is an abomination. trailing arm too long and because of desighn they had to add extra arms to help all of those single shear mounts.

  • Max Headflow
    Max Headflow

It's not the subtransmission that is clunky. It's the transmission. They do clank a bit for sure when shifting. While you may complain that the radiator looks small, you miss the 2 long steel tubes that transfer the coolant from front to back. While they don't have fins, they will help cool the coolant. Rear drive is locked full time, front is not locking but uses the brakes to control slip. It's a good design.

    • Max Headflow
      Max Headflow

@Mud Puppy Well based on your review, you seemed to say that there weren't any overheating problems but you were concerned about it. I guess with more miles you found an issue. I've got a 1000x and have not had any issues rock crawling when temps are in the 80s. The gauge is pretty much always at 2 bars. You have a P1000 that overheats? Jumping out of low will be a subtrans. The vibration in low is likely the design. Lower gearing transmits more of the engine pulsations through the drive train. IIRC you mention clunking. That is the main trans (DCT). The front wheel drive locking system will not work well if the brakes are wet. Rear is fill time locked.

    • Mud Puppy
      Mud Puppy

It's 100% the subtransmission that is my issue. It's a common complaint... It jumps out of low. The coolant piping is present in the p1000 as well... Still overheats like crazy. And the I-4wd is worse than can am visco lock.

Polaris should not be considered a premium brand, they make products for mass consumption. The quality is usually good enough for the 90% demographic they're after and lasts as long as their attention span, while every Japanese manufactured product will be durable for professionals and will still be a viable product after multiple owners.

    • Fl_ATV_ Riders
      Fl_ATV_ Riders

@srm360wxc Hmm something to think about I know the pioneer diffs can take some abuse and my foreman 500 and pioneer both drive like crap when diffs are locked 0 turn radios

    • srm360wxc
      srm360wxc

@Fl_ATV_ Riders the talon used a much thinner rear diff then the front. Probably because it's a spool not a differential. I noticed that on Polaris 6x6. The middle diff on the 6x6 is always locked but the rear diff can unblock like pioneer. So I don't know a pioneer rear diff would bolt right in or not. But the front might be the same size.

@Fl_ATV_ Riders I didn't know if I would like the I 4wd but I have a Yamaha grizzly with a locker. You know when the locker is engaged. It's very hard to steer and your turning radius much less. You never feel the steering in the Honda change or the turning radius. That's why I like better.

@srm360wxc next question I wonder if pioneer front and rear diffs are able to be swapped haven't really looked at the talons in depth. But if what you say is true that the pioneer has lower gears. Then that would be a good option for people like myself that need bigger tires and dont do much high speed driving.

@srm360wxc it will break axles if you cant drive. My pioneer 1000 dont break axles and it has a full locker and you dont speed around with axles locked. You lock them in when needed. Its just more parts to go bad in my opinion. Simple has always been better and longer lasting.
