The fixed point should have been on the towing vehicle and the post it notes should have been on the vehicle being towed. I feel like that would leave less opportunity for one side to pull off.

It would've been easier if you'd used elastic rope of some kind... The rope would extend enough by a short bit to give the rest enough time to pull as well. So the 48 sticky notes would still be fine and would be tested to its limits... With elastic rope the pull force is distributed closer to evenly
